Stepcairn vs Tango

Both turn a process you click through into a step-by-step guide with screenshots. Tango is a cloud service with team workspaces and in-app guidance. Stepcairn is a Chrome extension that keeps every guide on your computer. Here is how they differ, plan by plan.

How we compared. Every Tango fact below comes from Tango's own public pages and links to the page it came from. We read them on 18 Oct 2026; plans and prices change, so check the linked page before you decide. Stepcairn is made by us, Busywright. What Tango does better

  • Cloud sharing. Share by URL or embed, and the guide stays current when you edit it.
  • Team features. A shared workspace even on the free plan, plus comments, roles and viewer insights on Pro.
  • Guidance inside apps. On-screen walkthroughs on Pro, and Pins, Guide Me and automations on Enterprise.
  • More places to capture. Desktop capture on paid plans, plus voice and video embeds.
  • Enterprise controls. SSO, SCIM, audit logs, translation and automatic PII detection.

Where Stepcairn is different

  • Guides stay on your computer. Nothing is uploaded, so screenshots of internal tools and customer records never leave your machine. You need no account.
  • Export on the free plan. HTML and Markdown export are free; Pro is $6/month or $48/year.
  • Plain files. Guides export as one HTML file or as Markdown you can paste into a wiki or a repo.
  • The trade-off. Nothing syncs, so export the guides you want to keep. Uninstalling Stepcairn deletes them.

Which one fits

Choose Tango if your team shares guides by link, wants a shared library, or wants guidance shown inside the apps people use. Choose Stepcairn if your guides show things that should not sit on someone else's server, if you are happy to share files, or if you want export on a free plan.
